I was there when the island of thera exploded. Our animals had sensed that there was something wrong before hand and ran off towards the sea. Upon seeing this we packed as many possessions as we could carry, got in our boats and fled towards mainland grease. We stayed in Athens for many days before we heard and saw the explosion.
It was monstrous. The sound could be heard for miles around and the smoke covered the earth, making the sky grey. Maybe in years to come people will write stories about the island and perhaps not but now, this is a disaster to be mourned because many people have lost their homes and possessions.
The people of thera will have to start a new life without any money except the money they brought with them and even that will only be enough to buy them food for a short while. So far the Athenians have been kind to us but that won’t last much longer. We have brought some of the pottery we made with us from the island and will sell it to earn some money but I doubt we will get much for it so we will have to come up with another way of earning money. I hear there is an unsettled island to the south. Tomorrow I will set out to explore it and see what I can find.
Today I arrived on the unexplored island and it was beautiful. There is a view like none I have seen and from one side you can see all of Greece. I also found something very interesting. Thera has disappeared! Perhaps this is the god’s punishment for all the wrongs the people of thera have committed. Tomorrow I will return to Athens to tell the people the news. I know they will not take it lightly but I must tell them or else I will have a guilty conscience.
As I said , the people of Thera did not like the news I brought, but did like the sound of the island I explored. Some of the younger adults said that we should move there right away but the elder members of our town said to wait until we have more money. Personally I am with the elders. There is no point in creating a new island without money, food and other important resources to use. Perhaps in time we will be strong enough to move our townspeople to the new island but for now we will wait.
